Gold steadies near record levels as central bank buying continues

The metal has held close to its highs, supported less by the investor flows that usually drive rallies and more by continued official sector accumulation.

That distinction matters for producers. Central bank demand is price-insensitive in a way that exchange-traded flows are not, which changes the shape of any correction.

Australian and Canadian producers have used the period to repair balance sheets rather than expand, a discipline shareholders have so far rewarded.
